Four Facts About Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a repetitive stress or overuse injury that affects the plantar fascia, which is a thick band of tissue that stretches from the ball of your foot to your heel. It is the most common cause of heel pain, and can eventually affect your ability to walk comfortably or wear certain shoes. At John J. Giovanelli, DC, PC, our chiropractor Dr. Giovanelli has extensive experience evaluating and treating plantar fasciitis in Peachtree City, GA. Read through these surprising facts about plantar fasciitis, and then visit us for plantar fasciitis treatment.

1. Plantar Fasciitis Is Caused by Wear and Tear or Strain

The primary cause of plantar fasciitis is wear and tear or strain of the plantar fascia. This can happen if you frequently wear high heels or if you are a dancer or runner. Spending a lot of time on your feet or sitting for long periods of time can increase your risk of strain. Flat feet, high arches, tight calf muscles, obesity, and rheumatoid arthritis can also increase your risk of plantar fasciitis.

2. The Main Symptom Is Heel Pain

The main symptom of plantar fasciitis is heel pain. The pain might increase when you stand or put weight on your foot. Pain is usually worse in the morning when you first get out of bed, but it can reoccur later in the day after spending a long time sitting down.

3. It Is Diagnosed With a Physical Exam

We will first do a physical exam to determine if you have damage or strain to your plantar fascia. We will also assess your symptoms, lifestyle, and overall health. We may also take an x-ray or MRI to rule out other causes of foot pain or to confirm an injury to your fascia.

4. There Are Many Treatment Options

There are many different options for treating plantar fasciitis. We will recommend a combination of physical therapy, lifestyle changes, and chiropractic care to address the underlying cause of your plantar fasciitis, relieve pain, and reduce your risk of recurrence. We will recommend rest and therapeutic exercises and stretches, as well as changing your footwear, taking smaller steps, avoiding high-impact exercise, and not walking barefoot. We will also suggest custom orthotics, which are special shoe inserts that provide added arch support and relieve pain.
